Chris was taken ill during a training session at Fareham Heathens club.
An ambulance was called and paramedics treated the youngster at the scene before rushing him to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth where he died later that night.
Chris, a pupil at Brookfield Community School in Sarisbury Green, played rugby both for his school and Fareham Heathens and was a member of Warsash Sailing Club.
He was also active in the Sea Scouts and was voted the Warsash group’s Scout of the Year earlier this year.
Brookfield head teacher Maria Allan said: “Chris was a high-achieving, fun-loving young man. He has left behind fond memories and a contagious smile which will long be remembered.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Mr and Mrs Giles and their family.”
She added that he was respected by his school friends and made a significant contribution to the school.
Chris’ year group leader Evelyn Gothard said: “Chris was a very popular student with a wide variety of interests.
“He took his responsibilities seriously but could always be seen with a grin on his face. Chris has touched so many lives; he will be sadly missed.”
Students in the top three years at Brookfield were told of his tragic death at a series of special assemblies.
A counsellor was present and all other students and their parents informed by letter. At the assemblies pupils were told that Chris had died on Wednesday and that his parents had said: “We want school to go on as normal but for people to think about him.”
His parents Steve and Julia, of Brasenose Close, Fareham, were too upset to speak to the Daily Echo last night. A special noticeboard has been set up at school by Chris’ friends for students to record their personal tributes to him.
Within hours it had been flooded with heartfelt tributes and touching epitaphs.
One friend wrote: “I'm really proud to have called you my friend.”
Deeply missed A Fareham Heathens rugby club spokesman said: “He will be deeply missed and our thoughts are with his family at the moment.”
Group Scout leader of Warsash Sea Scouts, Alistair Davidson said: “He was enthusiastic as mustard and always did his best which is all you can ask of a Scout.
“He took these qualities into his everyday life and was nice to people and a wonderful, talented young man.”
